The prayer fighter is a term used by many evangelicals and other Christians to refer to anyone who is committed to praying for others.
In the context of Dominion theology, prayer fighters see themselves engaged in spiritual warfare against demonic powers.
Prayer warriors can pray for individuals, or for entire states or territories. One of the most recent developments is the prayer done by groups of people who fly over areas where they want to intercede.
During the Iraq War, one aspect of the debate over US involvement was the "prayer battle", with one side praying to support the Bush administration's policies and the other taking an anti-war stance. Alabama Governor Bob Riley urged his constituency to act as a fighter for prayer, and Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue set a three-day weekend prayer he threw as a spiritual battle. Although most "prayer fighters for peace" are identified as Christians, Muslims in the US and Indonesia are also said to have taken part.
Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate in the 2008 US presidential election, regularly recognizes the support of prayer fighters in speeches and interviews, and has spoken of them as offering "prayer shields." As a candidate, he thanked the prayers for their support and spoke of divine intervention in the election as a result.
