Five methods of praying the Rosary are presented in the works of Saint Louis de Montfort, a Roman Catholic priest of France and an early 18th century writer. Montfort is an early proponent of Mariology, and much of his work is devoted to the subject of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the rosary. While the rosary contained a fixed set of prayers read out with the use of beads, Montfort proposed a number of methods to pray the rosary with more total devotion. Two of these methods are described in his book The Secret of the Rosary in fifty roses:
"To facilitate the implementation of the Holy Rosary, here are some methods to recite it holyly, with a meditation of the joyful, glorious and glorious mystery of Jesus. You stop at the thing that best suits you: You can shape yourself with other special methods, as some saints have done. "
Three additional methods (ie, five totals) are listed in the book God Alone , based on the writings collected from St. Louis.

General approach
St. The first Louis did not change the prayer of Our Father or Hail Mary in the rosary, but inserted additional petitions or meditation while the rosary was being prayed for. For example, in the first method, St. Louis gave a special additional prayer at the beginning of every decade: he asked for the detachment of the material, as follows:
- "We dedicate You, O Child of Jesus, this third decade to honor Your Holy Fate, and we ask You through this mystery and through the Blessed Mother's intercession, the release of the things of this world, the love of poverty and love of the poor. "
In addition, he added a special prayer after every decade. The following prayers for a joyful mystery:
-
- Grace the mystery of the Incarnation, descend to my soul and make it really humble.
-
- The grace of the mystery of Visitation, down to my soul and make it truly generous.
-
- The grace of the mystery of the Nativity, down to my soul and make me really poor in spirit.
-
- The grace of purification mystery, descends upon my soul and makes it truly wise and completely pure.
-
- The grace of the mystery Finding the Son of Jesus in the Temple, descending into my soul and completely transforming me.
Similar, but different, petitions are reserved for a sad and glorious mystery.

Five Methods
St. Louis Montfort The Secret of the Rosary has the first and second method. The first method is described above. In the second method, one or two words are added to each Hail Mary in this decade. The third method combines the first and second elements, and is made for the use of Daughters of Wisdom. The fourth method incorporates small reflections for each bead, usually associated with the mystery of this decade. The fifth method focuses the reflection on the rosary itself: its strength, history, and prayer; in what way it should be said (slowly and quietly, etc.); and objections to the rosary prayer for caution, such as, "One can be saved without praying the rosary."
