Legend behind the festival
The Vrata is named after Savitri, the beautiful daughter of King Aswapati of Madra Desa. He chose Satyavan, a prince in exile who lives in the forest with his blind father, Dyumatsen, as his life partner. He leaves the palace and lives with her husband and father-in-law in the forest. As a devoted wife and daughter-in-law, she tries hard to take care of them. One day while cutting wood in the forest, Satyavan's head was rolled up and he fell from a tree. Then Yama, the God of death, appears to take the soul of Satyavan. Being so wounded, Savitri begs Yamraj not to be separated from her husband. If anything, he will take the soul of her husband and he will also follow. Yamraj, moved by Savitri devotion, restores her husband's life. Soon Satyavan regained his lost empire.
