World Day of Prayer is an international ecumenical Christian laity initiative. It is run under the motto of "Informed Prayer and Prayer," and is celebrated annually in more than 170 countries on the first Friday of March. The movement aims to unite women of different races, cultures and traditions in the annual General Prayer Day, as well as in closer fellowship, understanding and action throughout the year.

History and Alternate
World Woman's Day of Prayer began in the United States in 1887, when Mary Ellen Fairchild James, wife of Darwin Rush James of Brooklyn, New York, called for daily prayers for the household mission, and Methodist women asked for a week of prayer and self-denial to foreign missions. Two years later, two Baptists held a Joint Prayer Day for the World Mission. The Day of Prayer initiated by these two women extended to Canada, then to the British Isles in the 1930s. Focusing movements on ecumenism and reconciliation led to growth after World War II. Since 1927, March is known as the World Day of Prayer for Women. Catholic women were allowed to join the movement after the Second Vatican Council, beginning in 1967, and unifying what became their day of prayer at the World Women's Day of Prayer in 1969.
Two other Christian denominations celebrated the World Day of Prayer in September. The Unity Church, a Protestant denomination of New Thought based in Unity Village, Missouri celebrates World Day of Prayer twenty-four hours, especially on the second Thursday in September (member churches can begin at sunset on September 11, and the themes are different from them. World Women's Day of Prayer set out below). Also, the September 11, 2001 terrorist incident prompted the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic alliance, to set that date annually as World Peace Day of Prayer.

Destination
Through the World Day of Prayer, women are encouraged to be aware of other countries and cultures and no longer live in isolation. They are also encouraged to take on the burden of others, to sympathize with other country and cultural issues and pray together and for them. They are more compelled to realize their talents and use them to serve the community. The World Day of Prayer aims to show that prayer and action are inseparable and both have an unmeasurable influence on the world.
Program
Each year, the service focuses on different countries and themes. World Day of Prayer The country's National/Regional Committee prepares a worship order on these themes for use on the next World Day of Prayer.
On the first Friday of March, then, in service around the world the country becomes the focus of prayer and understanding. Through preparation and participation in worship, women around the world learn how their sisters from other countries, languages ââand cultures understand the passage of the Bible in their context. They learn about the worries and needs of the women and empathize and feel solidarity with them.
