Cooking spraying is a form of oil spray as a lubricant, lecithin as emulsifier, and propellants such as food grade alcohols, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide or propane. Cooking spray is applied to fry pots and other cooking utensils to prevent food from sticking. Traditionally, the chef uses butter, butter, or oil that is poured or rubbed on cookware. Most cooking sprays have less food energy per serving than vegetable oil applications, because they are used in a much thinner layer: US regulations allow many people to be labeled "zero calories"; in the UK spray claims to supply "less than 1 calorie per serving". Popular US brands include Pam, Crisco, and Baker's Joy. Sprays are available with plain vegetable oil, butter, and olive oil flavor.

Cooking spray has other culinary uses other than applied to cookware. Sticky candies like Mike and Ike are often sold in vending machines can be sprayed with cooking spray so as not to stick to the machine. Coating the inside of a measuring cup with a spray allows sticky substances such as honey to pour more easily. Vegetables can be sprayed before the spices to make the seasoning more sticky.
