Memorare (" Remember, O Mighty Virgin Mary ") is a Roman Catholic prayer that seeks the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Memorare, from the Latin "Remember," is often mispronounced by the 12th-century Cistercian monk Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, apparently due to confusion with a 17th-century popularizer, Father Claude Bernard, who claims he learned it from his own father. It first appeared as part of a longer 15th century prayer, "Ad sanctitatis tuae pedes, dulcissima Virgo Maria."

Francis de Sales
The de Sales family is a member of the small nobility and the persistent Catholics, but St. Francis de Sales became a victim of religious upheavals his age. The question of predestination, the hottest point of contention between Catholic and Calvinist theologians, tortured him while he was a student in Paris. In his grief over the unpredictable fate of his soul, he cries out to God, "Whatever happens, Lord, may I at least love you in this life if I can not love you in eternity." At the age of 18 years, while studying in Jesuit run CollÃÆ'¨ge de Clermont at the University of Paris, according to the book Spirit St. Francis de Sales , by Jean-Pierre Camus:
the evil spirit was permitted by God to inculcate into his mind the terrible notion that he was one of the condemned. This delusion seized his soul so that he lost his appetite, could not sleep, and day after day wasted and lethargic. The teacher and director pointed to how his health was affected, and how pale, lethargic, and unhappy he had often questioned him about the cause of real sadness and suffering, but his tormentors who had filled his mind with this imagination, became what was called a mute demon, poor youth could not give explanation.
For a whole month he suffered this mental torture, the suffering of this soul. He has lost all the sweetness of divine love, but not, with pleasure, his loyalty to it. He looked back with happy tears to a happy moment when he was, therefore, drunk with that sweetness, nor was there a ray of hope that illuminated the darkness of the night of despair. At the end of December, finally, led by divine inspiration, he enters a church to pray for this suffering to pass.
Kneeling before the Blessed Virgin statue she begged Mother of Mercy with tears and sighs, and the most powerful devotion.
According to De Sales' Selected Letters , "the torture of despair ends suddenly" as he kneels in prayer in front of the statue of Our Lady of Good Liberation (Mrs Black) in the church of Saint-Æ' â € ° tienne-des-GrÃÆ'¨s, Paris, pronounces Memorare. Francis praised the Blessed Virgin by "saving him from falling into despair or heresy"; he "read Memorare day by day", and he "did not leave it without help".
Claude Bernard
It was popularized in the 17th century by Fr. Claude Bernard, (d.1641) who learned it from his father. Bernard's devotion to the Virgin Mary with the title Consolatrix Afflictorum (the Comforter of the Oppressed People) led him to promote another path to intercession among the poor and cursed prisoners. According to the book Familiar Prayer: Their Origin and History written by Fr. Herbert Thurston S.J. in 1953:
Fr. Claude Bernard, known as the "Poor Priest", has vigorously dedicated himself to preaching and assisting prisoners and criminals sentenced to death. Believing the charges for the care and intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Fr. Bernard uses Memorare extensively in evangelization works for great effect. Many criminals are reconciled with God through his efforts. At one time he had over 200,000 leaflets printed with Memorare in various languages ​​so he could distribute leaflets wherever he felt they would do something good.
Part of the reason Fr. Claude Bernard held such a prayer because he himself felt that he had been miraculously healed by his use. In a letter to Queen Anne of Austria, Louis XIII's wife, she writes that she is very ill. Frightened of his life, he read Memorare and soon began to heal again. Feeling unworthy of such miracles, he connects the drug with some unknown natural causes. Sometime later, Brother Fiacre, a discontinued Agustinian, came to call Fr. Bernard. The good brother begged Father. Forgiveness Bernard for bothering him, but he wanted to know how Fr. Bernard is getting along. Brother Fiacre then went on to say that the Virgin Mary had appeared to him in a vision, informing him of Father. Bernard's illness, tells him how he healed Father. Bernard about it, and that he had to convince the Pastor. Bernard about this fact. Fr. Bernard then goes on to write in his letter that he is ashamed of his ignorance in connecting medicine to natural causes, and asks God's forgiveness on this issue.
"Memorare" plays a role in the conversion of Marie-Alphonse Ratisbonne, when upon the courage of a Catholic acquaintance he agrees to wear a Testament Medal and recite a month's prayer.
This prayer became popular in England through France, and appeared in the 1856 edition of Bishop Richard Challoner, The Garden of the Soul. In a 1918 article published on the Moon Month on the theme of Familiar Prayer , Herbert Thurston discusses "Memorare" as one of the prayers he considers to be representative of the English Catholic prayer. By "familiar", Thurston means the most prayers among some of the faithful. There are at least five separate versions in circulation at that time. Mary Heinman observes that "Memorare"... became a favorite of British Catholics in the post-1850 period for reasons that have no direct connection to the direction of the pope or the indigenous tradition. "
William Fitzgerald notes, "Asking Mary to" remember "is an act of courage, but it is a courage justified by tradition.... Mary does not need to remember her role in the salvation world, but those who call her do need such a reminder, specifically more general - to remind them of their place as an applicant before the Virgin Mary. "Asking Maria to intercede as an Advocate does not guarantee that special requests will be given, only divine assistance will be given.
