Yuwipi is a traditional Lakota healing ceremony. During the ceremony, the physician was tied up with a blanket and a special rope, and the physician and his supporters prayed and sang to heal the person who had requested the ceremony. The ceremony can be performed for one person at a time, or for a small group of people together, depending on the severity of the case and the strength and ability of the person leading the ceremony.

Spirits

The spirits are called varied with individual medicines, also with the purpose of the ceremony. The spirits may be the spirits of the human ancestors or they can be animal spirits. The animal spirits can be birds or they can be four-legged animals.

Yuwipi Men

The yuwipi are physicians and are bound and direct the ceremony. During the ceremony he calls out spirits that can help people. While traditions and protocols are passed down from generation to generation of healers, each Drug Man has his own way of performing the ceremony.

Ceremony

It is important for people in attendance to follow certain rules. Drug man chanupa (ceremonial pipe) is present during the ceremony, which involves prayer, drums, and traditional songs. Some songs call spirits, and others tell the spirits it's time to go and end the ceremony.

This ceremony is often very draining for the yuwipi because of the focus needed to interact with the spirit and because the spirits use their life energy to heal the participants. Therefore, yuwipi men often live short and difficult lives.
