Three Hail Marys is a traditional Roman Catholic devotional practice that recites three Hail Marys as a petition for purity and other virtues. Believers recommend praying after awakening in the morning, and before going to bed, following the examination of conscience at night. This devotion has been recommended by St. Antonius of Padua, St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. John Bosco and St. Leonard from Port Maurice. The two saints, Mechtilde and Gertrude, are said to have received revelations from the Blessed Virgin Mary regarding this practice.

Histori
The practice of reciting Hail Mary three times dates at least into the 12th century. One of the first to practice and recommend it is St. Anthony of Padua (1195-1231). The goal is "to honor the clean Virginity of Mary and to keep the purity of mind, heart and body perfect in the midst of the dangers of the world". The practice of saying three Hail Marys at night somewhere about sunset has become common throughout Europe in the first half of the fourteenth century and it was recommended and induced by Pope John XXII in 1318 and 1327.
Many saints have practiced and recommended the devotion of the "Three Hail Marys", like, St. Leonard from Port Maurice, St. Bonaventure, St. John Berchmans, St. John Baptist Mary Vianney (Healing Ars), St. Stanislaus Kostka, St. Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort, St. John Joseph of the Cross, St. John the Baptist de Rossi, St. Gerard Majella, St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, Blessed Marcellinus Champagnat, St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. Gemma Galgani, and St. JosemarÃÆ'a EscrivÃÆ'á.
This practice was observed by the Franciscans and eventually evolved into Angelus prayer.

Revelations of the Blessed Virgin
St. Mechtilde of Hackeborn (1241-1299), a Benedictine nun from the abbey of Helfta, experienced three visions of the Virgin Mary. Mechtilde was saddened by his eternal salvation and prayed to the Virgin to be present at his death. In these appearances Mary assures her, and teaches her to understand specifically how the Three Pioneers of Mary honor the three persons of the Holy Trinity. The first prayer reminds of the power it receives from the Eternal Father to mediate sinners, the second commemorating the wisdom received from the Son; and the third, the love he carries, is filled with the Holy Spirit.
According to St. Gertrude (1256-1301), the Blessed Virgin Mary pledged the following: "To every soul who faithfully prayed for the Three Feasts of Mary, I will appear at the time of death in the splendor of such a magnificent beauty that will satisfy the soul with heavenly consolation."
One suggested method is as follows:
O Mary, by your pure and Unclean Conception, make my body pure and my soul pure.
Mary, merciful, Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and be fruitful of your fruit, Jesus. Santa Maria, the mother of God, pray for us who are sinners, now and at the time we die. Amin.
O my Mother, keep me today from sinful sins.

O my Mother, keep me today from mortal sin.
More recommendations
Then, St. Leonard of Port Maurice "has three Ave Marias read out in the morning and evening to honor Maria Immaculate, to get grace from avoiding all the sins of the day and night, moreover, he promises in a special way of eternal salvation to all those who prove to be always faithful to practice this. "
Doctor of St. Christ Church Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787) adopted this pious practice and highly recommend it. He tells parents to train their children to gain the habit of saying three Hail Marys in the morning and evening. After each Hail Mary, he counseled that the following prayer be said: "With your pure and Immaculate Concept, O Mary, make my body pure and my soul holy."
According to St. Catholic Church Martha of Princess Pallottine, after the Night Prayer: "Many saints have practiced adding three Hail Marys here to honor the purity of Mary for the grace of holy and holy life." [1] Thus, it has been recommended as a daily practice for those who have received the Confirmation Sacrament that they pray the Three Hail Marys for "purity of mind, heart and body" after examination of the conscience, before going to sleep.
Adaptations
St. Virgilius Council 185, Knights of Columbus, in Newtown, Connecticut, initiated the Three Hail Mary's Prayer Prayers to support those affected by the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The Council requested the Knights Council and other religious organizations to encourage the prayer of one Hail Mary for the deceased and their family, one for the first respondent and teacher, and one for the community.
It is a common practice for Catholics to offer three Hail Marys for any given issue or petition.
