Histori
Initially "The Prayer" was recorded as two separate solo versions, Dion's in English and Bocelli in Italian. They appeared on the Quest for Camelot soundtrack in May 1998. The duo was included in the album by both artists, released a few months later at Sogno and This Time Special Time . Bocelli sang the original Italian song while Dion translated into English. The song won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song from the 1998 movie Quest for Camelot , the second consecutive victory for the song Celine Dion. In the film, Dion sings it as a solo with slightly different lyrics. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1999 and a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2000. Dion did it with Bocelli in both ceremonies.
It was also featured in Dion's Collector's Series compilation, Volume One (2000) and the greatest hits My Love: Ultimate Essential Collection (2008). The re-recorded solo version by Celine Dion (renamed "A Mother's Prayer") appeared on her 2004 album Miracle. Dion performed "The Prayer" live during his Taking Chances tour as a virtual duet with Bocelli on screen; the show was released on the Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert CD/DVD. The song also appeared in the 2007 Bocelli compilation The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere . Dion joins Bocelli to perform the song at Concert Concert: One Night in Central Park in 2011; the show was later released on CD and DVD. Both Dion and Bocelli have been singing songs with other artists, and various other artists have recorded songs, either as duets or solos.
The original version of "The Prayer" failed to be mapped on the US Billboard Hot 100, but is very popular on adult contemporary charts in Canada and the United States, peaking at number 6 and number 22 respectively. It also became popular during Christmas, weddings and, in some cases, funerals and religious services.

Critical reception
Paul Verna from Billboard calls this song "a beautiful duet." Chuck Taylor of Billboard reviewed the "The Prayer," calling it "a remarkable, very fancy song, and a combination of a tour de force from Dion and Bocelli that will send half a dozen cold chills." Though he feels that the song is "an unusual song for radio," Taylor calls it "influential," "heartwarming," "really beautiful" and "one of Dion's most radiant shows ever."
