src: achristianpilgrim.files.wordpress.com

A number of prayers to Jesus Christ are in the Roman Catholic tradition. These prayers have different origins and forms. Some are associated with the vision of the saints, others inherited by tradition.

Some such prayers are provided in the Roman Catholic prayer book Raccolta, first published in conjunction with the Catholic Congregation of Indulgences in 1807.

The prayers listed in this article are due to the saints, or have been used by the saints (eg Augustine of Hippo, Ignatius of Loyola, Louis de Montfort, etc.) But they are not usually associated with certain Catholic devotions by the day highway. Therefore they are grouped separately from the prayers that accompany Roman Catholic devotion to Christ like the Sacred Face of Jesus or Divine Grace.

In many cases special promises and powers are given to special prayers or devotions to Jesus even though some of the prayers of reparations do not include petitions.

Anima Christi

The literal meaning of Anima Christi is the soul of Christ. This is from the early fourteenth century or earlier. At some point in history, it is associated with St. Ignatius Loyola, who used it in the Spiritual Exercises, but later found in the texts that preceded St. Ignatius.

The sequence of phrases in Anima Christi has rich associations with Catholic concepts related to the Holy Eucharist (Body and Blood of Christ), Baptism (water) and the Passion of Jesus (Sacred Wounds).

Jean-Baptiste Lully composed a Motet called Anima Christi, and musicians like Giovanni Valentini did it.

Prayer of Sanctification to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Pope Leo XIII compiled the Prayer of Surrender to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1899 and included it in the encyclical 1899 which sanctifies the whole world to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The consecration was motivated by letters sent to the Pope by a Good Shepherd nun, Mary Divine Heart, stating that in the sight of Jesus Christ he was told to seek consecration.

You are Christ

Ancient prayer, you are Christ, composed by St. Augustine of Hippo. This is a rather long prayer in three parts.

The first part is the list of titles and greetings to Jesus, namely: "Holy Father, my Gentle God, the Great King, the Good Shepherd... My Eternal Salvation."

The second part involves a set of conversation questions, such as "why do I ever love, why in all my life have I ever wanted something other than You, Jesus, my Lord?..."

Prayer St. John Gabriel Perboyre to Jesus

Saint John Gabriel Perboyre, priest and martyrs arranging St. Do's St. John Gabriel Percoyre to Jesus in the 19th century.

The theme of prayer is to help transform yourself into more like Jesus and discard all that is unlike Jesus from one's heart, soul, and memory. This transformational prayer is built on Saint Paul's statement in Galatians 2:20: "I am alive - now it is not me - but Christ lives in me."

Saint Louis de Montfort Prayer to Jesus

The prayer of Saint Louis de Montfort to Jesus is a reflection of St. Louis de Montfort's philosophy of "total consecration to Jesus Christ through Mary" a theme that centuries later influenced the development of Catholic Roman Catholic Mariology.

Although St. Louis is perhaps best known for Mariology and his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, her spirituality based on the mystery of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, and centering on Christ, as reflected in His collected work of God Himself.

As the prayer shows, St. Louis introduced the key concepts underlying Roman Catholic Mariology today: that Jesus and Mary are sons and mothers, redeemer and redeemed and that the way to Jesus is through Mary. Theologically, prayer reflects the inclusions inherent in Mariology in Christology.
