Sutrah - Wikipedia

sutrah (Arabic: ???? ? Lit., "screen, cover") is an object used by someone to perform pray as a barrier between himself and someone passing by in front of him. The person who prayed should be positioned less than or equal to the three long arms far from Sutra. Height of Sutra should be no less than one long arm (ie the height of the back of the camel's saddle), while the width does not have a specified size. The sutrah is obligatory for anyone who performs salat (except the sermon can not be found after searching).

While it is clear that it may seem like a player who is praying to an object in front of him, it is not absolutely necessary when praying. This can be replaced by facing a wall or just blocking a passer's path by hand. It is also forbidden for one to pass between one who is praying and his Sutrah, or to pass more than 3 long arms to one who does not have Sutrah in front of him (for the length of 3 arms is the farthest distance which can stay away from Sutrah). However, one is permitted to pass between the lines of the congregational prayer.

Rasulullah said: ?? ??? ??? ??? ????? ??? ??? ????? ??? ??? ????? ??? ??? ????????? ??? ??? ?????? Pray to the sutrah, and do not let anyone pass in front of you while praying. If he insists, then avoid him with violence because he is accompanied by the devil.

Rulings on Sutra

According to Madhab Sunni Hanafi, a person's prayer will not be canceled if one passes without a sutrah. According to Master Hanbali Shaykh Bin Baz, if a person prayed without a sutrah, the prayer would remain valid unless donkeys, black dogs or adult women walked in front of them.
