Histori
The words of the song were originally written by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1225 in the poem of Sun's poem, based on Psalm 148. The words were translated into English by William Draper, then a rector of a Church. the British parochial church at Adel near Leeds. Draper memparafrasakan Canticle words and set it to music. It is not known when Draper first wrote the song but between 1899 and 1919. Draper wrote it for the celebration of the Whitsun festival of his church's children and was then published in 1919 in the Public School Hymnsbook. Hymns are currently used in 179 different songbooks. Words written by Saint Francis are some of the oldest words used in the hymns after "Father We Praise Thee", written in 580 AD.
Like "Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones", the Draper text is usually set to tune " Lasst uns erfreuen ", a hymn German Passover published by Friedrich Spee in 1623 in his Auserlesene Catholische Geistliche KirchengesÃÆ'äng . The song became widespread in the books of English hymns beginning with a setting of 1906 by Ralph Vaughan Williams. John Rutter also wrote a piece of music for hymns. Although the song was originally written by Draper for Whitsun (Anglicans and English for Pentecost), it was mostly used in the early weeks of the Easter season.
