Buddha Birthday is a traditionally celebrated feast in much of East Asia to commemorate the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, then Gautama Buddha and founder of Buddhism. It was also celebrated in South and Southeast Asia as Vesak which also recognized the enlightenment and death of the Buddha. According to Theravada Tripitaka (from the Pali, meaning "three baskets"), Gautama was born in Lumbini in the ancient Indian Shakya clan, in 563 BC, according to the Nepal Account, and grew up in Kapilavastu. At the age of thirty-five, he attained enlightenment (nirvana) under the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya (modern India). He delivered his first sermon in Sarnath, India. At the age of eighty, He died in Kushinagar, India.

The exact date of Buddha's Birthday is based on the Asian lunisolar calendar. Dates for Buddhist Birthday celebrations vary from year to year in the Western Gregorian calendar, but usually fall in April or May. In the leap year it can be celebrated in June.

Date

The exact date of the Feast of the Buddha is based on the Asian lunisolar calendar and is especially celebrated in the month of Baisakh of the Buddhist calendar and the Hindu calendar Bikram Sambat, and hence also called Waisak. In modern times India and Nepal, where Buddha History lives, it is celebrated on the full moon day of Vaisakha month of the Buddhist calendar. In Theravada countries following the Buddhist calendar, the moon falls on the full moon of Uposatha, usually in the 5th or 6th month of the lunar month. In China and Korea, it is celebrated on the eighth day of the fourth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. Dates vary from year to year in the Western Gregorian calendar, but usually fall in April or May. In the leap year it can be celebrated in June. In Tibet, it falls on the 7th day of the fourth month of the Tibetan calendar (in May).

South and Southeast Asia and Mongolia

In South and Southeast Asia and Mongolia countries, Buddhist birthdays are celebrated on the full moon day of Vaisakha month of the Buddhist calendar and the Hindu calendar, which usually falls in April or May of the Western Gregorian calendar. • 2019: May 19

East Asia

In many East Asian countries, Buddhist Births are celebrated on the 8th day of the 4th month of the Chinese lunar calendar (in Japan from 1873 on April 8 of the Gregorian calendar), and that day is an official holiday in Hong Kong, Macao and South Korea. Dates fall from late April to late May in the Gregorian calendar.

Gregorian sun calendar dates mainly vary from year to year:

  • 2017: May 3
  • 2018: May 22
  • 2019: May 12
  • 2020: April 30

Taiwan

In 1999 the Taiwan government set the Buddha's birthday as the second Sunday of May, the same date as Mother's Day.

Japanese

As a result of the Meiji Restoration, the Japanese adopted the Gregorian calendar in lieu of the Chinese lunar calendar in 1873. However, it took until 1945, the end of World War II, for a religious celebration to adopt a new calendar. In most Japanese temples, Buddhist birth is now celebrated on the April 8 Gregorian calendar date; only a few (mainly in Okinawa) celebrate it on Chinese orthodox calendar dates on the eighth day of the fourth month.

He sat for a long time with inadequate food and water, which caused his body to shrink so that it could not be distinguished from the bark of the tree he was occupying. Seeing the weak Siddhartha Gautama, a woman named Sujata placed a bowl of "Kheer" in front of her as an offering.
