He initially signed a serial contract for a year and stated the possibility to renew his contract.
Mead originally auditioned for Kieron Fletcher's role in 2010, but was told he did not have sufficient acting experience. In guest appearances, Mead filmed scenes with Jane Hazlegrove, who plays paramedic Kathleen "Dixie" Dixon, and expressed her joy to shoot again with Hazlegrove.

"Kent said," When Lofty's character is being developed, we can not think of anyone else to be better to play it.We can not wait to start filming and are very happy to have Lee join the team. With a very different background for most of the other nurses, his clumsy charm will definitely win everyone. Despite a lot of partying, Lofty is a good man with good intentions. Lofty is fun and has a positive outlook, which according to Mead makes it "a very interesting character." Lofty gets awkward and Mead explains that Lofty tends to say "the wrong thing" and drops. Mead discovers that Lofty is usually "in his own little world", leading to an "awkward situation" he finds himself in. Mead sums up the character as "decent but lazy." Reza Moradi, director of the first episode of Lofty, described the character as "a sweet man who has had some temporary bad luck". Reporters writing for Inside Soap called the character a "cool nurse", "adorable", a "disadvantaged medic" and "beloved companion". Holly Wade of the Radio Times described Lofty as friendly and engaging, but also "a bit unaware and awkward".
Lofty Energy creates a good working environment; a BBC Online contributor says that ED is lucky to hire positive people, who have "energy and spark". The characters are naÃÆ'ïve and team players who contribute morale and liveliness. Lofty is a fantastic nurse and excelling in helping children. Kent's executive producer described Lofty as "the most adorable character" and compared it to the nurse John "Abs" Denham (James Redmond), who was well received during his tenure on the show. Barry, who wrote Lofty's introduction, thought Lofty resembled younger and less extravagant Hugh Grant and described the character as "a bumbly, beautiful, good man." Elaine Reilly from What's on TV is called Lofty a "courtesy officer" and a "cheerful nurse." Other critics have described the characters as "good", "friendly" and "authentic".
Lofty maintains the same characteristics when he joins the Casualty span-off series, Holby City . She is described as fun and uncoordinated, while Mead calls Lofty a "happy-go-lucky" character. Mead believes that Lofty is fun because he is different and unconventional, which looks sweet to the audience. During his absence on screen, Lofty developed a newfound belief. Mead said that he returned "a new man". He also stated that another corner for Lofty's personality will be featured on Holby City . Mead told reporters from What's On TV that Lofty understands "what he wants from life". Despite Lofty's newly developed belief, Mead insists that he has retained his personality traits. Mead thinks that Lofty has an unusual method of treating patients and argues that he resembles the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. A BBC Online correspondent found Lofty's awkwardness to be sweet rather than defective in characterization. They also stated that Lofty is not sophisticated, though this can be forgotten because he is warm and friendly. Lofty also does not believe in karma because he has witnessed "too many bad things happen to good people."
Backstory and introduction
Lofty is a trained nurse who lives with his parents and uses their money for the party. Lofty repeatedly told his parents that he would apply for a job and find a place to live, which he never did. Her parents were getting bored with her and her father asked her to move so that Lofty lied and told them that she had found a house. In May 2017, Mead revealed that Lofty's backstory will be explored, specifically the reason for the character to join the nursing profession. Wanda Ventham plays the Sheilagh Chiltern, the grandmother of Lofty, by the end of 2017. Sheilagh appeared in January 2018 when she was accepted at AAU after hurting herself in the garden.
The first episode of Lofty, titled "The Last Chance Saloon", airs on March 1, 2014. In Lofty's first scene, it appears that he lives in the attic of a house owned by his father and hired by Robyn Miller (Amanda Henderson) and Max Walker (Jamie Davis) , after stealing the keys to the house. The scene gives the character with the nickname, "Lofty". Robyn found her at home, topless and about ironing clothes. Henderson explains that Robyn is scared and angry to find Lofty. Robyn pursued it and so, Lofty - still topless - "forced to run for it" by jumping over the fence in the rain. Moradi believes that the sequence order is something that Barry "thinks of when passing many things", but struggles with due to the practicality of the location. The chase sequence was the first scene filmed Mead, which he found real.
In pursuit, Robyn was injured after stepping on a rake and Lofty had to decide to "leave him and run, or do the right thing"; Lofty chooses to help Robyn and Barry explain that it is Lofty's nature to stay and help Robyn. Mead says Lofty stays because he's a "nice guy". Because he helped Robyn, Lofty missed an interview at a local hospital. Upon discovering this, Robyn talked to management about Lofty and she was offered an empty nursing position at the hospital. Mead explains that Robyn can see that Lofty is a good person and therefore, and helps him take on the job, he offers a place to stay for him. Mead praised the character's introduction, expressing his joy when recording it. In an interview with BBC Online, Mead revealed the filming lasted for twelve hours a day and summarized the day as "really [rolled] in the mud." Henderson added that the filming was interrupted by bad weather. Moradi praised Mead's approach to filming in his introduction, praising his professionalism; He said that Mead was "really cool" with the cast and crew set.
Friendship
Lofty's friendly personality helped him form friendships with people. Barry thinks that Lofty will fit in with his peers easily because he's so relaxed. The author expects Lofty to have a good relationship with Robyn, Max, and Noel Garcia (Tony Marshall). Lofty shares a close relationship with Robyn and also, Mead shares a good friendship with Henderson. They shared many scenes together and Barry compared their relationship to the relationship shared between siblings. In early 2015, Robyn develops feelings for Lofty and tries to form relationships with her. Reflecting on Robyn's feelings, Henderson said, "She loves her very much, but she does not feel the same way."
Producers make a friendship between Lofty and consultant Dylan Keogh (William Beck). Mead enjoys filming with Beck because they're okay. He said that the difference between Lofty's "awkwardness and sincerity" and Dylan's "very dry and direct" approach made "a good contrast". Mead reveals that he and Beck often continue to conduct corpsing in the taking. In November 2015, Hossington teases the Christmas episode of the show and reveals that Lofty and Dylan will feature a lot in it. He commented, "There's a most fantastic ending with Dylan and Lofty that people will talk about for a very long time!" Hossington also expressed his joy at Lofty's relationship with Dylan and described them as a "weird couple" with "bromance fun". Mead loves the installation of Lofty and Dylan, calling their friendships "weird but also quite special". The actor hopes that Lofty's friendship with Dylan will continue to grow after his move to Holby City. He told Brown ( Radio Times ) that the characters formed "funny ties" and found them an odd couple that evolved over time.
In Holby City , Lofty has a good relationship with his boss, Sacha Levy (Bob Barrett), because they share the same personality and Sacha understands that Lofty is trying his best. Mead likes to work with Barrett and says it's fun to watch their friendships grow. Lofty also formed friendships with his Keller colleagues, including Essie Harrison (Kaye Wragg) and Raf in Lucca (Joe McFadden), with Mead suggesting Lofty's potential for developing friendships outside the environment. Producers plan to create more connections for Lofty when they know who is working well.
More storylines
At the time of his introduction, Mead promised "some good storylines" for Lofty. In the initial storyline, paramedic Kathleen "Dixie" Dixon (Jane Hazlegrove) asks Lofty to help reunite the patient with her estranged mother and severely ill before she dies. Lofty agrees to help Dixie and they hire a campervan and take mother and daughter to the beach. Mead explains that the character "does good deeds". He added that the son's reunion with his mother was "uplifting" because they had a broken relationship. Mead said he enjoyed filming episodes, but eventually described the episode as "a pretty sad episode". Lofty was punished for his actions; Mead revealed he would be "relegated for a while and sent to other parts of the hospital".
In January 2016, vacancies for senior staff nurses became available and Dylan encouraged Lofty to apply. Before the interview, Lofty was a "bag of nerves", which got worse when he arrived and found that the hospital's CEO, Henrik Hanssen (Guy Henry), would interview him. As Lofty settles, Clinical lead Connie Beauchamp (Amanda Mealing) forces him to return to work because ED is overcapacity. Despite believing he had ruined his chances, Lofty offered promotion.
In November 2017, Lofty learns that Morven Digby (Eleanor Fanyinka) is estranged from his mother, Evelyn Chapman (Imogen Stubbs). When Evelyn was hospitalized with a stomachache, Lofty started treating her. However, he was forced to reveal Evelyn's identity to Morven when he tried to treat her. Morven "got angry" with Lofty's trick.
Departure
By the end of 2015, producer Hossington teases a new storyline for the characters, who will not "disappoint" fans. He added that Dylan will showcase the story line with Lofty. The storyline began in February 2016 when Lofty was challenged to run ED in the absence of senior nurse Charlie Fairhead (Derek Thompson) and Rita Freeman (Chloe Howman). Although Jacob Masters (Charles Venn) is planning to run ED, Dylan volunteers Lofty for the job, which he reluctantly receives after a push from Dylan. Mead explains that as a senior staff nurse, Lofty has been waiting for such an opportunity. Great panic when he has to deal with "soccer hooligans and AWOL patients", but regains control and runs the department successfully. Lofty hired nurse agent Diane Stuart (Catherine Skinner) to help with the ED workload; an Inside Soap reporter described Diane as "incompetent".
Diane fought from a deep sleep and when Lofty caught him taking the pills to keep him awake, he asked to discuss it with him in his office. Diane reveals that her husband recently left her and her teenage daughter so Lofty offered him a second chance. Lofty, Diane and Dylan then get stuck in the elevator and have to awaken the patient. When she failed to raise her hand from the patient on time, Diane shocked herself and died. Mead promised that Diane's death would create a drama for Lofty. She revealed that she became emotional when she watched the episode. After Diane's death, Lofty begins to blame herself for her death and prepares to be interviewed by the hospital board, who decides whether Lofty can keep his job. Dylan is "adamant" that none of them blame and encourages Lofty to "firmly" with the council, but when Lofty meets Diane's mother, she questions whether she should be blamed. Mead explains that Lofty is fighting to overcome Diane's death because she "sees so much of herself in her".
The council allowed Lofty to continue working, but he decided to resign regardless because of his feelings about Diane's death. Lofty explains that he's struggling with Diane's death. Mead explained that Diane's death was "a very big thing" for Lofty because it happened to her first shift as a treatment leader. Mead also explained that Lofty needed "distance and time" to understand the events surrounding Diane's death and decide if she could return to the hospital and "face the demons within herself". Reflecting on the reason for his character to leave, Mead says that Lofty "is very shy and embarrassed to face his comrades". He told Tricia Martin about Total TV Guide that Lofty was injured by the event and compared it with marital disorder, commenting that "it is always there, but you have to move forward - life goes on." He observes that Diane's death left the character of "trauma". Lofty decided to take a break from his job and travel to Australia and New Zealand while training as a grieving counselor. Mead explains that Lofty is disappointed with himself and decides that he needs to move "as far as possible". When the actor watches the episode, he becomes emotional and feels proud of the storyline, hoping the viewer will sympathize with Lofty.
Outside the screen, Mead took a year's absence from the show to spend more time with his daughter and explore new roles. Mead chose to leave the show because he got "itchy feet" and wanted to go back to the theater. The producers tried to persuade Mead to stick with the show and offered to extend his contract by two more years, but he wanted to spend more time with his daughter as he grew up. Describing his experience of Casualty , Mead says it's "amazing". Mead assured the show's fans that he could repeat the role because Lofty still has a job in the hospital. He promised to return to the drama. Nevertheless, Mead told Elaine Reilly from What's on TV that her comeback has not been confirmed and there is a chance she will not re-act her role. Mead's official website describes his break as "12 month absence absenteeism". In September 2016, Mead expressed interest in repeating his role. He reflects on his role in May 2017, commenting that he missed the show as he created "strong ties" on the show.
Holby City introduction
In September 2016, Kent asked Mead to re-enact Lofty's role in the Casualty spin-off show, Holby City . The actor originally believed Kent asked him to play back a role in Casualty so it was rejected, but when Kent explained the situation, he accepted it. Holby City was filmed at the BBC Elstree Center, which is a 45-minute walk from Mead's home and benefited him because he can continue to help take care of his daughter. Mead believes that he will never repeat his role, but feels that Lofty can be explored further so that he is happy to receive the call. Mead initially signed up for a three-month trial to explore whether the character was working well with other characters. The contract is then extended to September 2017, with the potential to extend the contract beyond that. Mead confirmed in August that his contract has been extended to 2018, and told Michael Ball on his radio talk show that his contract expires in September 2018.

Ridiculed that Lofty could "still run away from his problems". The acting executive producer of the show, Simon Harper, said, "It's so thrilling [...] that Lee makes his 'journey up' as Lofty.Keller Ward will pass some dark times, so Lofty's trademark warmth and kindness will come only at that moment right. "Mead then tweets his joy and branded this" next chapter "of his career. Mead's move to Holby City was criticized by his former fellow stars Henderson and Crystal Yu (who portray Lily Chao), who hopes he will repeat the role in Casualty . Mead began filming on February 20, 2017, with his first episode scheduled for May 2017. Mead felt "nervous" on the first day of filming, but felt more confident after a few scenes. He adds that he misses describing Lofty because he is a "great character". In August 2017, Mead reflects on his transition from Casualty to Holby City , stating that he can be at home every day. He also commented, "I think for six months I was in Holby City, I have a bigger story than in two years in < i> Casualty ! "
Lofty was introduced to Holby City in the nineteenth episode of Project Aurous series, broadcast on May 16, 2017. The actor teased that Lofty would return "with a punch". She arrives to shift in Keller's neighborhood as an agency nurse and first appears to straddle the patient whose heart has stopped, giving them CPR. Mead labeled the "punchy" entrance. When traveling, the character regains her confidence and returns stronger, having met new people who have helped her. Great struggle in its change and have a "crisis of confidence". He then hit Robyn. Guest Henderson starred in the episode for Lofty introduction. Mead told Duncan Lindsay, a reporter for Metro, who, while bumping into Robyn, Lofty "kept making mistakes and he almost gave up again". Robyn reminds Lofty of his quality and reignites his passion for breastfeeding. The actor enjoys the scene, calling it "pretty". Lofty initially decided to leave after his agency changed so he could continue the journey, but after realizing how much he missed the profession, he decided to stay. Sacha then offers Lofty a permanent position as a nurse in Keller's ward. Mead enjoyed his introduction to Holby City , describing it as "nice" and "very interesting". In the second episode, Lofty appears to help in the theater, which Mead describes as a great moment for him. In the two-episode introduction, Mead said, "There are many shooting hours - about 140 in about two or three weeks! I feel lucky to have a great story line to get back."
Mead informs Laura-Jayne Tyler of Inside Soap that she has filmed a guest appearance on Casualty featuring Lofty attending Caleb Knight's funeral (Richard Winsor), who was killed-off in an episode recently. He added that he hoped for another crossover appearance and suggested that Lofty could visit Robyn. The big guest guest in the thirty-first episode, "Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep", airs on June 17, 2017.
Sexuality and Dom Copeland
Initially the stormy clash with Frosty's "Frosty" doctor, Dominic "Dom" Copeland (David Ames), who became annoyed by Lofty's personality and displays a negative response. Mead told Dainty ( Digital Spy ) that Dom is a "strong" character who struggles to understand Lofty. The character did not develop his original friendship since Dom was careful of Lofty, although Mead suggested that friendships could be made. Prior to Lofty's arrival, Dom was involved in a domestic violence storyline and when Lofty found this, he tried to support Dom. Mead reveals that Lofty and Dom are building a healthy friendship, which will be "interesting" to watch. Mead enjoys acting alongside Ames commenting in a fun "look at how [their friendship] is revealed." In August 2017, Mead stated that Lofty was Dom's protector. Ames also liked Lofty and Dom's relationship and commented, "Lofty has reminded [Dom] that people can be nice and good.
While traveling, Lofty enters a relationship with Alice Dujon (Tiana Benjamin) who helps her "find herself and rebuild her confidence." This was explored in the second episode of characters when Alice's brother, Lenny Dujon (Micah Balfour), was accepted into the ward. Lenny reveals to Dom and Sacha that Lofty puts his sister at the altar after they are engaged. Mead explains that Lofty is "annoyed" with Lenny for revealing his secret. Mead previously teased the storyline in the storyline, and in that episode, it was revealed that Lofty developed feelings for Lenny, creating a love triangle. Mead talked to Kent about Lofty's sexuality and told him that he would be "more than happy" for Lofty for gays, but did not want Lofty to be defined by his sexuality. He added that the director, Jermaine Julian, was helpful with the storyline and made him "proud". Mead told Victoria Wilson of What's on TV that he did not want to describe Lofty struggling to get out and instead chose to portray "a matter of fact and the audience only find this side to Lofty, really good to play. "Mead felt that the storyline helped him simplify the role and help rebuild the character. She also enjoys exploring Lofty's private life as never before explored.
In August 2017, Holby City series producer Kate Hall liked Lofty and Dom's relationship, remarking, "It's very beautiful, measurable, unhurried and very respectful of the fact that Dominic has been badly damaged." He insists that the storyline is a long-running plot and mentions that it is centered around the "resilience and goodness" of Loft for Dom. Ames stated that the relationship was "slowly burning" because of Lofty's unfair personality and unfairness and Dom's destructive relationship with the previous man. Nevertheless, he hopes that the audience will remain warm for the relationship. Lofty confessed at Sacha about her sexuality. Mead understands that in terms of his sexuality, Lofty is a private person, which is the reason he only confesses in Sacha. Sacha reveals Lofty's secret to Dom, which leads to Dom questioning whether there is a connection between him and Lofty. When Lofty Dom presents two tickets for the show, Dom's suspicions become more aroused. Dom's mother, Carole Copeland (Julia Deakin), is accepted into Keller's neighborhood and encourages Dom to speak with Lofty. Driven, Dom kisses Lofty in the staff room, but Lofty refuses Dom. Mead explains that Lofty rejected Dom because he was surprised by his actions. He adds that Lofty does not realize that Dom has feelings for her. Mead told reporters from What's on TV that Lofty wants a relationship with someone who "he can feel safe with". He also mentioned that he enjoyed the growing friendship at Lofty and Dom.
Three weeks after their kiss, Lofty overhears Dom talking about his crush and assumes Dom is talking about it. Lofty is "embarrassed" when Dom reveals that he has a crush on other men and becomes jealous. An Inside Soap reporter observed that Lofty was "hit with a green-eyed monster box!" Dom's encouragement helped Lofty to understand his feelings for Dom. However, Lofty wants to avoid complicating his friendship with Dom. Mead says that Lofty has created a complicated situation for himself. The actor also suggested that for Lofty and Dom, "the timing is not right" for a relationship. In describing Lofty's sexuality, Mead explains that he wants to avoid Lofty "struggling to get out" because he hopes to represent the modern society. Lofty, Dom and other hospital staff then run a charity race to commemorate Arthur Digby (Rob Ostlere). Lofty believes that she should wear fancy clothes so dress like a cock, embarrass herself. Nurses became jealous when Dom's new "beau", Freddie Chapel (Aaron Fontaine), ran with them. When a car hit a runner during the race, Lofty worried that Dom had been beaten, though Dom revealed that Freddie had been hurt. When Lofty realizes that Dom is upset, Lofty advises him not to get too involved with Freddie. Mead states that Dom struggles to understand Lofty's change of attitude.
Mead reveals that Lofty will be transferred to the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) after Lofty and Dom's friendship becomes "awkward", though he teases that the character can return to Keller's neighborhood. Massive transfers in October and struggled to tell Dom, even though he finally did. Mead and Ames both observed that Lofty and Dom share on-off links and Ames compared their relationship to the on-off relationship between Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) and Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) in the American sitcom i>. Ames loves to play a happier relationship scene after 18 months of taking a heavier picture, calling the "silliness and lightness" of the story in the spotlight. The actor enjoys working with Mead and feels that professionally, they are similar.
In January 2018, Lofty's grandmother, Sheilagh was admitted to the hospital and Dom supported Lofty when he became upset. The incident caused Lofty to question his future with Dom. Sheilagh could not be released from the hospital because of her deteriorating health. Mead explains that Lofty is concerned about his grandmother's safety and wants to make it "comfortable and safe". Lofty considers Sheilagh's move to a nursing home, but she insists that she does not want to move to a nursing home. Dom indicates that Lofty and Sheilagh moved into his flat with him. Mead told Victoria Wilson about What's on TV that Lofty was "a little weird" over Dom's proposal, but understood that it was "some sort of attitude". Lofty explains to Dom that he does not feel comfortable moving along with Sheilagh, and this makes Dom's question whether Lofty really has feelings for her. In future characters, Ames reveals that they will "head in the right direction" even if they encounter problems. He also teases, "You'll see some beautiful interactions between two characters".
