Life

She was born Giuseppe Maria Village , son of Felice Desa and Francesca Panara in the village of Cupertino, then in the province of Apulia, in the Kingdom of Naples, now in the Italian province of Lecce. However, his father died before his birth, the family home was confiscated to pay off the huge debts he left behind, and his mother was forced to give birth in the cage.

Joseph began to experience incredible vision as a child, which will continue throughout his life, and make him the object of scorn. His life was not helped by his frequent outbursts of anger. He immediately apprenticed by his uncle to the shoemaker. Fascinated by religious life, in 1620 he applied to the Conventual Franciscan friars, but was rejected for lack of education. He then appealed to the Capuchin brothers at Martino, near Taranto, whom he received in 1620 as a lay brother, but he was dismissed because the continued ecstasy made him unfit for the tasks required of him.

After Joseph returned to his family's ridicule, he appealed to monastic monks near Cupertino to be allowed to serve in their stable. After several years of working there, he so impressed the monks with the dedication and simplicity of his life that he was accepted into their Order, destined to become a Catholic priest, in 1625. He was ordained a priest on March 28, 1628. He was then sent to < i> Madonna delle Grazie , Gravina di Puglia, where she spent the next 15 years.

After this point, the ecstatic opportunity in Joseph's life began to multiply. Claimed that he began to drift while participating in Mass or joining the community for the Divine Office, thus gaining a broad reputation of holiness among the people of this region and beyond. He is considered troubling by his religious superiors and Church authorities, however, and ultimately confined to small cells, barred from joining public meetings.

When the phenomenon of flying or levitation is widely believed to be related to magic, Joseph was criticized by the Inquisition. At their command, he was transferred from one Franciscan brothers in the area to another for observation, first to Assisi (1639-1653), then briefly to Pietrarubbia and finally Fossombrone, where he lived together and under the supervision of the Capuchin brothers (1653 ). -57). He practiced hard asceticism throughout his life, usually eating solid food only twice a week, and added bitter powder to his food. He passed through 35 years of his life following this regimen.

Finally, on July 9, 1657, Joseph was allowed to return to the Conventual community, sent to one at Osimo, where he soon died.

Acceptance skeptic

Skeptics are not convinced that Saint Joseph has magical or paranormal powers. They have suggested that eyewitness reports of alleged levation are unreliable because they are subject to enlargement, or years after his death.

Robert D. Smith in his book Comparative Miracles (1965) argues that Saint Joseph performed similarly to a gymnast. Smith notes that some of his alleged appointments "came from leaps, and not from a vulnerable or simple stand or kneeling position, witnesses mistakenly thought of the jump of a very agile man to fly."

Human poisoning due to the consumption of wheat bread is made from ergot wheat which was common in Europe in the Middle Ages. It is known to cause seizures and hallucinations. British academic John Cornwell advised the Saint Joseph to eat whole wheat bread (see ergot poisoning). According to Cornwell, "Here, perhaps, put the key to his appointment." After tasting his own bread, he clearly believes he's gone. "
