Cat hammer (or hammered paint) is a special veneer with a surface that looks like a metal hammered when it is dried. It is also known as hammertone.

Composition
The slightly colored areas are caused by the different orientations of the very small glossy particles suspended in the shellac. These particles are often made from mica minerals. Mica is chemically inactive and highly resistant. Alternatively, aluminum or bronze powder may be used. To make the "hammered" effect more obvious, a small percentage of silicone oil can be added directly before the application.

Cat hammers are often used to beautify technical equipment and not so common as a protective coating. The advantage of optical paint hammer is that the surface looks acceptable even though its surface is uneven and smooth surface. To get regular paint to look smooth, the surface must be prepared first, for example with spackling, sanding, grinding or polishing. With hammer paint, this step can be removed. Some hammer paints (eg by Hammerite) are formulated to be used directly on rusted steel without surface preparation other than brushing to remove loose rust.
Beyond that, the robustness of mica increases the durability of the paint job. Mica reduces aging by protecting the underlying binder from UV radiation. Mika also makes the paint hammer relatively hard and scratch resistant.
