In Southern culture, the phrase "back door man" refers to a man having an affair with a married woman, using the back door as a way out before the husband comes home. "When everyone tries to sleep, I'm somewhere to make my midnight crawl/Every morning a rooster crows, something says that I have to go/I'm the back door guy," Wolf sang. The "back-door man promiscuous" is the theme of many blues songs, including those by Charley Patton, Lightnin 'Hopkins, Blind Willie McTell and Sara Martin: "every reasonable woman gets a back-door man," Martin wrote in "Weird Loving Blues "(1925). Led Zeppelin refers to Dixon's song in "Whole Lotta Love" (1969) ("Goyang for me girl, I want to be your back man") and in "Since I've Been Loving You" (1970) ("You must have one of they're crooked back door men! ").

Music

The song was recorded in Chicago in June 1960 by Howlin 'Wolf (vocals), Otis Spann (piano), Hubert Sumlin and Freddy Robinson (guitar), Willie Dixon (double bass), and Fred Below (drums). The chord in the refrain of a song, similar to that found in Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man" (1955), John Lee Hooker "I'm Mad (Again)" (1957), and Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man" (1954) date back to work songs sung during the construction of railroads. "Back Door Man" is included in the 1962 Wolf Howler 'Wolf compilation album . He re-recorded the song in November 1968 for The Howlin 'Wolf Album .

Other versions

The song has also been recorded by Guy Mitchell, Chicken Shack, Blues Project, Shadows of Knight, Bob Weir, Sam Gopal, Ford T-Model, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Soul Asylum (fronted by Iggy Pop, at the opening of The Rock and Hall of Fame Roll). Frank Marino, from the band Mahogany Rush, recorded it on Mahogany Rush Live . The songwriter, Willie Dixon, recorded it for his 1970s album I Am the Blues . In 1984, "Back Door Man" was also covered by Viktor Lazlo. Eric Burdon did so during his tour with former Doors guitarist Robby Krieger in 1990 and 1991.

Nicknames "Back Door Man" also attached to Dick Cheney when he served as White House Chief of Staff for Gerald Ford. The moniker allegedly referred to the handling of Congress negotiations by Cheney and his ability to achieve his goals in a way that is often unclear.
