Childhood
Kurt Bestor was born in 1958 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He took piano lessons from his mother as a child. His grandfather played a trumpet in Big Big bands and his uncle played with a trumpet on Jack Benny's band. Later, Kurt Bestor and his family moved to Orem, Utah in 1966, where he attended Orem Middle School and learned how to play trumpets. When Bestor watched the 1975 Jaws movie, he later recalled "I know that's what I want to do when I see Jaws during high school, I've been scoring movies ever since." He decided to write a soundtrack for the movie he did for The Buttercream Gang and Rigoletto. He is also influenced by classical music.

In 1977, Bestor and his family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He then continued a two-year religious mission in Yugoslavia, where he observed social issues such as homelessness, poverty and war, which would inspire his last song "Children's Prayer." After his mission, Bestor married his first wife, Melodie.

Personal life
Bestor's 20-year marriage with Melodie's first wife ended in 1999, and her second hasty marriage with Holli Ammon (singer) ended in 2001 after just a few months. Balancing career obligations with family tasks becomes difficult and creates a distance between Bestor and his children, Kristin and Erika, both born with spina bifida, a spinal defect that causes partial paralysis and other defects.
In January 2003, Bestor married Petrina, a Kenya-born safari driver who moved to Utah after serving as assistant Robert Redford at the location of Out of Africa.
