Symbolism
ORU is a charismatic Christian university. According to the school publicity, the tower's shape is full of Christian symbolism. The Tower of Prayer is located in the center of the campus to symbolize the central role of prayer in the university's goals. Discs and spindle designs take the appearance of a cross from any horizontal bearing, and from the air resembles the Star of David. The "upward spiral" tower is meant to reflect one's relationship with God. The grid that surrounds the observation deck is reportedly constructed in part from a standard white PVC pipe (with the original indication mark still somewhat noticeable) and is intended as a semi-literal representation of the crown of thorn worn by Jesus on the cross, in red. coloring for the blood of Christ shed in death. The top of the tower has an eternal flame representing the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
