Matthew 6: 6 is the sixth verse of the sixth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament and is part of the Sermon on the Mount. This verse continues the discussion of the proper procedure for prayer; ie, do not do it in public, but do it privately.
In the King James Version, the text reads:
- But you, when you pray, enter into your
- cupboard, and when you close your door, pray
- to your Father in secret; and your Father
- who sees secretly will reward you openly.
The World English Bible translates this section as:
- But you, when you pray, go into your mind
- space, and after closing your door, pray for
- Your Father in secret, and Father
- who sees secretly will reply you publicly.
For other versions of the collection, see BibRef Matthew 6: 6
After blaspheming an excessive prayer in the previous verse, this verse describes the proper procedure for prayer. Like charity, true believers must act in secret.
The theologian Eduard Schweizer points out that the room (Greek: span lang = "el"> ??????? , tionion ) referred to in this paragraph will be the storage space. Most of Jesus' audience will stay in homes with only one room, but in Palestine it is common to have separate storage areas with doors to protect foodstuffs. This would be the only room with a door. Schweizer points out that this reference has been assimilated by the words of Isaiah 26:20:
- Come on, my men, enter your room, and close your door behind you ,
an action that Pulpit Comments relate to "the terror period".
Albert Barnes argues that "every Jewish home has a place for secret devotion" is like a room above the front porch, whereas Charles Ellicott thinks the reference is "guard cabinets, where it seems most unlikely for men, to connect with the idea of ââprayer ".
The end of this verse is parallel to the end of Matthew 6: 4. This verse adds God's reference everywhere in secret, and is able to see all that is kept secret. Like Matthew 6: 4, most scholars feel that "openly" is a wrong addition at the end of this verse. This was included in the 1599 Geneva Bible, but was omitted from the English Standard Version and New International Version.
