Biography
MacNutt grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He got a B.A. degree from Harvard University in 1948, and a M.A. in a speech and drama from The Catholic University of America, Washington. In 1950, MacNutt joined the Dominican Order and was ordained a priest in 1956. He has a Ph.D. degree in theology. He taught at the seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, for several years before moving back to St. Louis in 1966 to become executive director of the National Catholic Conference of Conferences.
MacNutt learned about the charismatic movement through Protestant Pentecostal friends. As a young Roman Catholic priest, he was prominent and influential in the charismatic renewal of the 1960s, and during the 1970s he became associated with the practice of speaking in tongues and faith healing and appearing on television with Ruth Carter Stapleton, sister of President Tukang cart. In the late 1970s he was director of the Thomas Merton Foundation in St. Louis. Louis.
He left Dominicans to marry his wife, Judith Carole Sewell, a psychologist, in February 1980 and they settled in Clearwater, Florida, where they founded Christian Healing Ministries in the same year. Her decision to marry was controversial in the Catholic charismatic movement. Since the beginning of their marriage, MacNutts has traveled extensively, speaking and serving together. In 1987, at the invitation of the Episcopal Diocese of Florida, they moved to Jacksonville, Florida, and expanded Christian Healing Ministries into a healing center for the ministry and teaching of prayer.
In 1993, MacNutt received a dispensation from the authority of the church, and their marriage was celebrated with a ceremony presided over by Reverend John Snyder, Bishop of St. Joseph's Diocese. St. Augustine, at the Marywood Retreat Center in Jacksonville. MacNutt and his wife have two grown children, Rachel and David.
In 2007, the Catholic Charismatic International Revitalization Service at the Vatican sponsored an international conference with Christian Healing Ministries (CHM) for 450 Catholic leaders from 42 countries. The conference was held in Jacksonville, with the aim of bringing MacNutts' teachings to Churches around the world.
The whole ministry of Francis has been dedicated to bringing healing prayers back to the right places among Christians. In 1974, he wrote Healing, which has become a classic. His other books include: The Power to Heal , The Healing Prayer , Overcome by the Spirit , Submission of the Evil Spirits , Homosexuality: Can It Be Cured? and The Healing Reawakening. He and Judith also co-wrote Pray for Your Unborn Son.
In 2008, Francis was named Judith to succeed him as President of CHM, and now Francis enjoys the status of President Emeritus.
