Plot
Tomoe Tatsumi, a high school student from Nagoya, traveled to Tokyo to take the university entrance exam. He strayed around Tokyo when he met, Mitsugu Kurokawa, an office worker who had been out drinking with his friend, Isogai. Isogai throws at Tomoe and Kurokawa takes him to clean his damaged coat and tells him that he will help him find his hotel, but then they realize that the address to the hotel is in the pockets of his now washed mantle, further complicating the situation.
Since Kurokawa has additional space in his place, he offers to let Tomoe stay in his place for the night. Tomoe accepted and the next morning he went to take the entrance exams. When Tomoe took the train back to Nagoya, Kurokawa kissed him. Tomoe looked surprised and shocked at this and Kurokawa thought he would never hear from him again, but was surprised to receive a postcard from Tomoe telling him that he passed the entrance examination. When Tomoe returns to Tokyo to look for a place to live, he asks for Kurokwa's help and Kurokawa offers to let him rent out the extra space in his apartment. Tomoe thought it would be a good idea because it would save his family money and accept the offer. Kurokawa finally confessed his love for Tomoe and their relationship grew gradually, but not without the interference of various friends and relatives.
Tomoe's grumpy older brother, Souichi Tatsumi, was suspicious of the life arrangements and tried many times to get Tomoe back home. It was revealed that Souichi was homophobic because he was almost raped by one of his professors at his university but his lab assistant, Morinaga, rescued him. Because it happens, Morinaga is gay and has liked Souichi for 4 years starting from the moment they met. Souichi and Morinaga stories continue in the spin-off series, The Tyrant Falls in Love .

Reception
Julie Rosato notes that it is clear that Challenger, originally from 1995, is one of Takanaga's early works, because his art is not as beautiful as he did later, and there are some cliches in the storyline. However, Rosato found the first volume on the whole amusing. Writing about the second volume, Rosato feels that despite her BL-like story, Takanaga's execution entertains.
