The Discalced Carmelites or Barefoot Carmelites are Catholic pendulous orders with roots in the eremit tradition of the Desert Father and Mother. ( Discalced is derived from Latin, meaning "without shoes".) The order was established in 1593, based on the Carmelite Reform of the Ancient Observations by two Spanish saints Saint Teresa of the villa and Saint John of the Cross.
The Carmelite Discalced command is now known as the initial "O.C.D". The older branch of the Order, the Carmelite of Ancient Obedience, had the initials "O. Carm." The secular branch of the Order (Order of the Discalced Cultural Order previously known as the Third Order), has the initials "O.C.D.S."

Discalced Carmelites are men and women, in religious consecration and lay people, who dedicate themselves to a life of prayer. The Carmelite nuns live in closed (closed) monasteries and follow a fully contemplative life. The Carmelite monks while following contemplative life are also involved in the promotion of spirituality through their retreat centers, parishes and churches. The layman, known as the Secular Order, followed their contemplative call in their daily activities. Devotion to Our Lady is characteristic of Carmelites and is symbolized by the use of a brown scapular.
Carmelites trace their roots and their names to Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. There, in the 13th century, a group of European men gathered together to lead a simple prayer life. Their first chapel is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. They call themselves brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mount Carmel.
The first Carmelites came as pilgrims to Mount Carmel to live their own lifestyles. These early hermits were mostly laymen, who lived the unofficial religious life of poverty, penance and prayer. Between 1206 and 1214, St. Albert, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, brought the ascetics on Mount Carmel together, at their request, into the community. He wrote them formulas for life, expressing their own intentions and reflecting the spirit of pilgrimage to the Holy Land and the early communities of Jerusalem. They were also inspired by the prophet Elijah who had been linked to Mount Carmel. The influence can be seen by Elijah's words, "I have been exceedingly zealous for the Lord, the God of armies" (IKg 19:10) on the sign of Caramel. Within fifty years after receiving their power, Carmelite hermits were forced to leave Mount Carmel and settle in Europe.

Establishment
The combination of political and social conditions prevailing in Europe in the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries - the Hundred Years War, the Black Plague, the Reformation and the Humanist resurgence - negatively affected the Order. Many Carmelites and even the entire community surrender to contemporary attitudes and conditions that conflict with their early vocation. To meet this situation, the Rules are "mitigated" several times. Consequently, Carmelites are less and less similar to the first hermit of Mount Carmel.
St. Theresia of Avila considers the surest way to pray is to return to the Primitive Rule that embodies Carmel's authentic calling. A group of nuns gathered in their cell one night in September 1560, taking their inspiration from Carmel's primitive tradition and the Reformed Realion. Peter of Alcantara, a controversial movement in Spanish Franciskanism, proposed the foundation of a monastery of a type eremitis.
With few resources and often a fierce opposition, St. Teresa succeeded in 1562 in building a small monastery with the simplicity of solitude of the desert in the heart of the ÃÆ' vila, Spain, which combines eremitis and community life. On August 24, 1562, the new monastery St. Joseph was founded. His government, which retained Mary's distinctive character, contained the correct recipe for a continuous prayer life, guarded by a tight cage and supported by a solitary asceticism, rough work, persistent abstinence, fasting, and brotherly charity. In addition, Teresa imagined a command that was entirely dedicated to poverty.
Working in close cooperation with St. Teresa is St. John of the Cross, who along with Anthony Jesus founded the first monastery of Carmelite monks in Duruelo, Spain on 28 November 1568.
The Carmelite Discalced was established as a separate province of the Carmelite Order through the decree "Pia consideratione" of Pope Gregory XIII on June 22, 1580. With this decision Karmel Discalced is still subject to the General Prior to the Order of Carmelites in Rome, but the opposite is different from Carmelites as they may choose their own superiors and drafting their own constitution for their common life. The following Discalced Carmelite Round at Alcala de Henares, Spain in March 1581 established the Constitution of Carmel Discalced and selected the first province of Carmelite Discalced, Fr. Jerome Gratian, OCD. This office was later translated to the Superior General of the Discalced Carmelites.
Kharisma Carmelite
According to the Irish Province of the Carmelite Order, in relation to the religious order, the term charisma refers to characteristics that inspire groups and distinguish them from other religious orders. The charisma of every Christian family is a certain way in which its members are called to follow Christ. Because all Christians follow Christ, charisma will have many of the same elements, but the way these elements are emphasized gives each group a unique religious feeling.
The heart of Carmelite charisma is prayer and contemplation. The quality of prayer determines the quality of people's lives and the quality of service offered to others. Prayer and contemplation for Carmelites is not a personal matter between the individual and God but must be shared with others because charisma is given to the whole world. Therefore, there is an emphasis on the order of prayer teaching services and giving spiritual direction.
For a Carmelite, prayer is guided by the teachings and experiences of St. Teresa of ÃÆ' vila and St. John of the Cross, as well as the saints who followed their steps, such as St. ThÃÆ' Â © rÃÆ'¨se of the Son of Jesus and the Holy Face, Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity, Saint Teresa of Los Andes, and martyrs such as Edith Stein (St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross), PÃÆ'¨re Jacques and sixteen Martyrs of Compiegne.
Fraternity, service and contemplation are of crucial importance to all Carmelites. The ascetics are forced to leave their homes on Mount Carmel and settle in Europe. There they changed their lifestyle from ascetic to monk. The main difference is that the monks are called to serve God's people in several active apostles. Several assemblies were established for a certain occupation, but the Carmelite Order seeks to respond to what it sees as the needs of the Church and the world differ according to time and place, and so many brothers work in parishes, schools, universities, retreat centers, prisons and hospitals. The type of service in which each individual monastery engages will depend on the perceived needs of the people in whose midst he lives and his special talents.
Every day is marked with silence to pray. In addition to the daily Celebration of the Full Liturgy of the Hour, two hours are set aside for silent prayer without interruption. The community is kept pretty small. The brothers practiced a broad-based study discipline.
